In early 1994, Bill Mertens established Anuhea Farm in upcountry Maui, Hawaii, where he planted numerous varieties of protea. The crop flourished, and Anuhea is now a major supplier of protea throughout the U.S. Anuhea Flowers takes its name from the Hawaiian word "anuhea", meaning "a cool, soft, fragrant breeze throughout the trees" as our farm is surrounded by the scent of eucalyptus trees
Many different varieties of protea make up our plant mix, with the first major harvest taking place during 1996 with 195,000 stems harvested. In 1999, we were one of the larger producers of Hawaiian protea. We continue to grow, offer our customers the finest protea grown anywhere, and now have additional varieties ready to bloom this year of 2005.
Anuhea Flowers operates a small retail shop in Makawao, just a short distance from the farm. Here we sell protea gift boxes, protea wreaths, and other special arrangements which will change each month.
